Post-Tension Concrete in Bridges
Typical applications for internal bonded post-tensioning technology include the prestressing of bridges and precast segmental construction. External or band post-tensioning systems—placed outside of the cross-section and transferring the forces to the structure only at the anchorages and deviators—are commonly used for the repair and strengthening of existing bridges.
Advantages of Using Post-Tensioning in Bridges
- 01Ability to create complex bridge structures with demanding geometry, such as variable super-elevation & significant grade changes.
- 02Extremely long-span bridges can be constructed without the use of temporary intermediate supports.
- 03Increased load-carrying capacity & reduced structural depths.
- 04ESPT offers the right bridge construction equipment, knowledge, and resources, plus technical support from design to final execution.
- 05Significant cost savings can be achieved by choosing the right bridge construction technique.

Segmental Construction Methods
Segmental precasting of prestressed concrete bridges is a well-established construction method that offers many benefits on suitable projects. The advantages include economies from industrialized, repetitive construction procedures that reduce costs and construction time.
Factory production enhances quality and facilitates quality control. Rapid erection, minor site disruption, and easy maintenance of highway and railway traffic at the erection site are additional advantages. Segmental bridges are easily adaptable to curved alignments and may have pleasant aesthetics.

Precast Segmental Bridges May Be Erected Using Four Construction Methods
Special Equipment Required for Project Activities: Handle, transport, and erect the segments.
- 01Span-by-span erection with self-launching gantry.
- 02Balanced cantilever erection with ground cranes, lifting frames, or self-launching gantry.
- 03Progressive placement with a cable-stayed system or temporary piers.
- 04Incremental launching.
ESPT offers a complete range of equipment necessary for any bridge construction method, either combined or separately from other services.
